The Engineering Department comprises of Metalwork and Technology at Junior Cycle and Engineering at Senior Cycle. Both Higher and Ordinary level are offered in all subjects
Metalwork
Metalwork involves the completion of a project in 3rd, a 3 hour day practical exam and a theory test. Ordianry level students do not have to sit the 3 hour day practical exam which usually takes place in May of 3rd year. the project which the student must make in his/her 3rd year is dependent on the level taken. both projects will incorporate a design feature but in general are an examination of the students practical skills, accuracy and presentation.
Technology
Technology at Junior Certificate is a relatively new subject and has recently been rolled out at Leaving Certificate as a pilot programme. The course is diverse covering aspects of materials, electronics, projection systems, control systems, and the role of technology in society. Students must design and make a project based on a design brief, they must also sit a theory exam as part of their Junior Certifate exam.
Engineering
Engineering at Leaving Certificate is divided into three examinations. A design and make project with accompanying portfolio, a 6 hour day practical exam in May and a 50% theory exam as part of the Leaving Certificate examinations. The Engineering course covers chemistry, electronics, mechanisms, materials, production of polymers and metals, welding and the testing of physical properties of materials.
