Science is best defined as a careful, disciplined, logical search for knowledge about any and all aspects of the universe, obtained by examination of the best available evidence and always subject to correction and improvement upon discovery of better evidence. What’s left is magic. And it does’t work.— James Randi

Young Scientist Exhibition
January 2011
Congratulations to Fiona Caverly who won first prize in the Senior Social and Behavioural Sciences category. Her study ,which was entitled “Participant evaluation of the Young Scientist Competition ” looked at the effects participating in the competition had on participants. The project will be on display in the school in the coming weeks.
This follows on the success of 2010 which was also a successful year for HCS students. Four projects made it through to the final in the RDS. Of these, two were highly commended and one won second prize in its section.
In the Junior Individual Social and Behavioural Sciences section, Selma Muhovic’s study of volunteerism in local community centres qualified for the final. Mihaela Stamatova’s investigation of religious beliefs, practice and perceived quality of life was highly commended and Aisling Lawson’s research examining the correlation between maths anxiety, motivation and achievement was awarded second prize.
In the Senior Group section (Social and Behavioural Sciences), Maja Todorovic and Phillipa Cahill were highly commended for their case study of ideal partner preferences of senior second level students.
During the Christmas holidays, the students involved worked with Mr. Fitzmaurice to put the finishing touches to their projects. These students worked hard all year firstly to have their projects accepted for the final phase of the competition (500 qualified out of 1700 entries) and to finalise their presentations and prepare for judging. They have done themselves proud.
All first year students attended the Exhibition on Friday 14th January with their Science teachers. Perhaps some of them will be inspired to enter the competition next year.
